The General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions, (GEFONT) has celebrated International Labour Day or May Day in Kathmandu.
GEFONT observed the day by chanting slogans for labours’ rights, with the participation of committees from various municipalities within the Kathmandu Valley.
They held a demonstration carrying placards with slogans such as “Respect women’s labor” and “Resistance against structural discrimination, the right to identity, recognition, and protection for women workers.”
Every year on May 1, this day is celebrated around the world, including in Nepal. Today has been declared a public holiday in Nepal.
International Labour Day is celebrated globally in remembrance of the labor movement that began in 1886 in Chicago, USA, under the slogan “Eight hours of work, eight hours of rest, and eight hours for personal life.
