India’s Dhauliganga dam gates to open, caution urged in Mahakali coastal areas

Dhauliganga

Kanchanpur, October 2

The gates of India’s Dhauliganga hydropower project dam in Uttarakhand are set to open for 48 hours.

The District Administration Office, Kanchanpur, said the dam’s gates will be opened for silt clearance from 1 am on Saturday, October 3, until 1 am on Monday, October 5.

With the water level in the Mahakali River expected to rise once the gates are opened, the administration has urged residents of riverside areas to stay alert.

The District Administration Office has asked people living along the Mahakali River’s banks, as well as those travelling on the river, to take precautionary measures in advance.

Since the water level in the Mahakali is likely to rise during the period the gates are open, the administration has requested people not to enter the river or go near its banks, and to stay safe from potential risk.

The administration has also urged riverside residents to remain cautious, since the water level in the Mahakali may stay elevated for some time even after the gates are closed.
