Kathmandu, July 12
Indian visual artist Lalit Mohan Singh has opened his solo exhibition, ‘Inner Yards: Unmapped Memories’, at Artudio’s Patan Wing in Nakabahil, Lalitpur, presenting a new body of work developed during his residency under the Artudio International Artist Residency (AIAR).
The exhibition, inaugurated on Saturday, will remain open to the public from July 12 to 15 between 11 am and 5 pm.
The exhibition marks the culmination of Singh’s residency in Kathmandu and features paintings that explore themes of memory, absence, time and transformation. Drawing from his nearly two decades of experience as a marine engineer, Singh translates the psychological realities of life at sea—such as isolation, silence, endurance and pressure—into abstract visual narratives rather than depicting maritime subjects directly.
According to Artudio, Inner Yards: Unmapped Memories examines imagined spaces where memories are continuously reshaped instead of being preserved as fixed records. Through techniques including layering, scraping, erasure and reconstruction, Singh creates works inspired by doorways, walls, passages and shifting light, while subtly reflecting his observations of Nepal’s architectural and cultural landscape during his residency.
The exhibition is the outcome of the Artudio International Artist Residency, which provides international artists with opportunities for artistic research, cultural exchange and collaboration in Nepal. During his stay, Singh engaged with the local art community through studio visits, gallery exhibitions, discussions with artists and participation in cultural events, experiences that contributed to the development of the exhibited works.
Artudio said the residency programme aims to strengthen intercultural dialogue by connecting international artists with Nepal’s artistic and cultural environment through residencies, exhibitions, public programmes and community engagement.
The exhibition is open to artists, curators, students, collectors, researchers and the general public until July 15.
