Here are a few things to keep in mind while ‘redecorating’ your home.
Create a timeline
Create a timeline with regular milestones. Setting up a schedule will help maintain realistic expectations and keep the “bhai hal cha ni” attitude at bay. Keep track of millstones.
Having said that, it is also important to be patient. A schedule is not always set in stone; some milestones will be met easier than others. Deadlines have to be flexible as they need to be adjusted according to circumstances. Good design takes time.
Set a budget
Set a budget and try to stick to it. Evaluate what is necessary and try to work with what you have. Often times, you may not even have to start from scratch.
Making some minor adjustments can change the space around you drastically. Move around existing furniture, change lighting fixtures and play with new colors. For major expenditures, always ask your designer to present you with hi- and low-end versions. Budgets help you remain within the money you are willing to spend, but do open your mind to options.
Communicate
The level of communication between you and your designer can make or break things. Make sure you are always on the same page with the designer. Your vision needs to be clear.
While it is not necessary to micro-manage every detail, it is critical that you voice your opinion. At the end of the day, it is you that will have to live with the choices!
Create something that you are proud of (at least until you choose to redecorate again).
Do your homework
While collecting magazines cutouts and creating a Pinterest boards can be helpful, try to stick to materials that can be sourced locally.
Take a few days off to visit neighbourhood stores that specialise in furniture, lighting and curtains. Having a fair idea of what is available will not only keep costs low but repairs or replacements can be quick, if needed.
Know your decorator
Lasata Shrestha, interior design student and the recent winner of the national Interior Design Competition (IDC) says, “The main thing a potential client should do is go through the portfolio of the designers and select the one who you think is right for your project, then communicate properly about the project and let the designers work.”
