Kathmandu, November 4
The government has said that former Nepal Police chief Dan Bahadur Karki has not been punished but has merely been reassigned to a different responsibility.
Government spokesperson Sasmit Pokharel made the statement following a Cabinet meeting that decided to appoint AIG Manoj KC as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP) and assign Karki as the prime minister’s special security adviser.
According to Pokharel, KC’s promotion to IGP takes effect from Wednesday.
Announcing the Cabinet decisions, Pokharel said the government had created the post of special security adviser to the prime minister at the level of a Nepal Police IGP under the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers.
“The post has been created to provide the prime minister with necessary security advice, suggestions and consultation to strengthen the country’s peace and security situation under the current circumstances,” he said, reading out the decision.
He added that Karki had been assigned to the newly created post.
“With Dan Bahadur Karki assigned as the prime minister’s special security adviser, Additional Inspector General of Police Dr Manoj Kumar KC has been promoted to the post of Inspector General of Police under Rule 41 of the Police Regulations, 2014, with effect from November 4,” Pokharel said.
Journalists asked Pokharel why Karki had been removed from the post of IGP and whether the decision amounted to disciplinary action.
“Rather than being a form of action, this is simply a change in his responsibilities. He has been brought to the Prime Minister’s Office as a security adviser. A new IGP has now taken charge, and he will take the necessary steps,” Pokharel replied.
