Gaura festival kicks off in Sudurpaschim

Amargadhi (Dadeldhura), August 28

One of the biggest festivals of Sudurpaschim Province, Gaura, has begun today.

On the opening day, women observing a fast soak Biruda (a mixture of five types of grains and legumes) to mark the beginning of the festival. Hence, the day is also known as Biruda Panchami. The soaked grains are considered prasad and are used in the worship of Gaura Devi.

“To take part in this ritual, one should follow a strict vegetarian diet and celibacy for a month,” said Khageshwari Saud, an expert on the Gaura festival. After the fast, the festival formally begins.

“It is believed that fasting and worshipping Gaura ensures the health, longevity, happiness, and prosperity of one’s partner and family members,” Saud added.

From this day onward, it is also customary to perform the traditional Deuda dance, with men and women of all ages joining in circles. Since ancient times, the festival has been observed by worshipping Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva, as Gaura Devi.
