Future of transitional justice bodies still in limbo

Kathmandu, October 21

The fate of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons is still in limbo as leaders from Nepal Communist Party and Nepali Congress fail to reach an agreement over who ist o lead the two transitional justice bodies.

Senior leaders from the Nepali Congress and Nepal Communist party met at the Prime Minister’s residence on Monday to sort out the issue. However, the meeting could not reach a conclusion as leaders said they need more time.

One leader present at the meeting told Onlinekhabar that all leaders agreed that work needed to be done and have agreed to sit for another meeting to conclude this issue.

“We feel that we’ve been distracted by other things and that we didn’t give this issue much attention. We will soon hold another meeting which will help us appoint the leaders,” added the leader.

Both NCP and NC earlier this year had come to an agreement over who will lead the commissions. But, their recommendations were dismissed by the victims of the conflict wanted a say in the appointment of the chairmen of the two commissions.

A recommendation committee was formed under the leadership of former chief justice of the Supreme Court Om Prakash Mishra to suggest names for the top posts. However, the committee has failed to decide amid widening rift between Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Nepal Communist Party (NCP) Co-Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal.
