Four reasons why you’ll remember Oli’s last day as Prime Minister for sometime

Kathmandu, July 25

Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli tendered his resignation before President Bidhaya Devi Bhandari on Sunday evening, ending speculation that he was about to dissolve Parliament.

Oli, who announced his resignation at the very end of his two-hour-long speech in Parliament, criticised coalition partner CPN-Maoist Centre for not supporting a government that was nationalist and pro-development.

The camaraderie

CPN-Maoist Center chief Prachanda was Oli’s main proposer when he was elected Prime Minister in October. It was Prachanda who’s decision to pull out of government that led to the fall of the Oli government. Fierce rivals during the insurgency era, the two leaders reconciled after forming the government, but differences emerged soon.

The handshake

In Parliamentary democracy, the leader of the Opposition is called the Shadow Prime Minister. Deuba, who became the leader of the opposition, just few months ago, played the role well. Despite his failed attempt to topple the Oli government, he did not give up hope, and managed to convince Prachanda to let go off Oli.

The long walk, longer speech

Prime Minister Oli walked up to the podium to deliver his speech. He was confident and looked totally in control. In his two-hour-long speech, he struck every note on his accordion to prove that his was a successful government, and that UML would be a force to reckon with in the coming elections.

The finale

It was raining in Kathmandu when Oli left Parliament. The weather was as dramatic as the announcement he’d made few minutes earlier. Oli announced his departure with grace, without even trying to cling on to power. That is what is expected in Parliamentary democracy, but rarely seen in Nepal’s parliamentary history. This perhaps will be remembered the most from Oli’s last day as Prime Minister.
