Former NRB governor Khatiwada takes charge as Finance Minister

Kathmandu, February 26

Nepal Rastra Bank’s former governor Yubraj Khatiwada has assumed office as the country’s new Finance Minister. Khatiwada is the 32nd person to be appointed to the post.

The economist has in the past held key positions such as vice-chair of the National Planning Commission.

Khatiwada will now have to become a member of the Federal Parliament within six months. He was recently nominated by the KP Oli government to the National Assembly, bit his appointment was halted by a Supreme Court stay.

Khatiwada played an instrumental role in forming the UML’s manifesto and is considered a technocrat rather than a politician. His main challenge will be come up with a full-fledged budget for federal Nepal for the first time in history.
