FNJ seeks additional amendments to Media Council, IT bills

Kathmandu, February 24

A team from the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) on Monday met Speaker of the House of Representatives Agni Prasad Sapkota requesting him to make further amendments to the provision that restricts freedom of press and freedom of expression in the new Media Council Bill and Information Technology Bill.

A team comprising of acting FNJ President Bipul Pokhrel and general secretary Ramesh Bista urged the speaker to address the voices of stakeholders while drafting a law that concerns freedom of expression.

The memorandum submitted by the FNJ reads, “We believe that the Speaker will pay special attention to the Media Council Bill, the Information Technology Bill, as well as to bring the issue of the voices of the stakeholders together with the voices of the stakeholders in the parliamentary process, and to bring them to the wider discussion.”

FNJ has also urged Sapkota to increase discussions with stakeholders while drafting the law.
