The faces of Eid in Kathmandu

Muslims in South Asia are celebrating the end of the holy month of Ramadan by observing Eid-al-Fitr on Thursday.

The festival falls on the first day of the month of Shawwal.

The Kashmiri Mosque and the Jame Masjid in Kathmandu saw thousand of devotees gather to recite Islam’s Namaz on Thursday morning.

Those gathered included members of all walks of life, united by the occasion to celebrate one of the most important festivals in Islam.

Practising Muslims wake up early in the morning offer Salatul Fajr (the pre-sunrise prayer), and in keeping with the traditions of the Prophet Muhammad, take a shower before prayers, put on new clothes, and apply perfume.

It is forbidden to fast on the Day of Eid. It is customary to acknowledge this with a small sweet breakfast, preferably of date (fruit), before attending a special Eid prayer (known assalaat).
