EU, UN interact with Kavre women

Kathmandu, June 27

European Union along with UN Women and Embassy of Finland held an interaction programme with participants of Advancing Women’s Economic Empowerment (AWEE) programme in Banepa on Wednesday.

The aim of the event was to talk with the participants to know what they learnt from the programme and how they developed as a person. Through the AWEE, women were given training on two aspects – politics and entrepreneurship.

On the occasion, the women talked about how the programme had changed their lives and made them independent.

“We weren’t allowed to get out of our homes. But through the AWEE, we were taught how to get out and start our own businesses; talk to people and get into politics through which our voices would be heard. It taught about gender equality and how we played an important role to make sure we had equality,” said Sarita Shrestha.

“I admire your courage and determination. You have truly demonstrated leadership and empowerment and now it is your turn to pass it on to the new generation,” said UN Resident Coordinator Valerie Julliand to women leaders in Banepa, during the interaction event.

Speaking at the event, Ambassador of EU Delegation to Nepal Veronica Cody said that the EU for many years had recognised the importance of gender equality.
