Election Commission ‘restores’ monarchy in RPP charter

Kathmandu, April 20

The Election Commission on Thursday said it decided not to implement the decision to delete sections about monarchy and Hindu state from the charter of Rastriya Prajatantra Party.

Consequently, the party led by Deputy Prime Minister Kamal Thapa decided to withdraw all the protests launched against the constitutional body.

Last month, the EC had decided to remove the portions advocating Hindu state and monarchy from the RPP statute claiming the sections contradicted constitutional provisions of republican order and secularism.

Subsequently, the fourth largest party in the Parliament had announced various protest programmes against the move.

Just on Wednesday, the Commission had warned the party not to carry out any activities against it after the party leaders and cadres burned copies of the Commission’s decision during a demonstration.
