Dr Govinda KC breaks fast after govt agrees to issue Medical Education Ordinance

Dr Govinda KC breaks his 11th fast-unto-death on the 23rd day, on Tuesday, August 15, 2017.

Kathmandu, October 19

Medical education reform campaigner Dr Govinda KC on Wednesday ended his 14-day fast-unto-death after the government assured him that the Medical Education Ordinance would be issued by President Bidya Devi Bhandari to address his demands.

Earlier, Dr KC had launched the indefinite hunger strike demanding that Parliament endorse the under-discussion Medical Education Bill incorporating suggestions extended by the Kedar Bhakta Mathema-led panel. After the House automatically dissolved last week, Dr KC had demanded that the bill be issued as an ordinance in absence of the legislative body.

After the government assured to meet his demand, Dr KC ended the fasting yesterday by taking water and honey from a 10-year-old girl.

Meanwhile, the government and Dr KC have agreed to decrease the fees at Tribhuvan University Institute of Medicine, take action against officials of Tribhuvan University and Kathmandu University who were involved in irregularities and take population and geography as the bases for establishing medical colleges.
