DPM Nidhi likely to resign over tussle with Thapa

Kathmandu, April 7

Nepali Congress leader and Deputy Prime Minister Bimalaendra Nidhi is likely to resign over a tussle with another DPM Kamal Thapa.

This comes as Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal couldn’t decided over the pecking order of his three deputies Nidhi, Thapa, and Maoist leader Krishna Bahadur Mahara. While Nidhi and Thapa say they should be recognised as the senior-most Deputy Prime Minister, Mahara has remained silent on the issue. The Prime Minister hasn’t convened a meeting of this Cabinet in over a month due to the row.

A meeting of the Cabinet, which was supposed to pass important resolutions on the upcoming elections, was scheduled for Thursday, but the meeting was postponed for Sunday.

Nidhi, on Thursday, consulted ministers from the NEpali Congress and told  them he would resign if Prachanda decided to recognise Thapa as the senior-most deputy. He claimed that Mahara was also on his side.

Nidhi played an important role to negotiate a Congress-Maoist deal to form the Prachanda government, and he was acting Prime Minister during Prachanda’s visit to India. But when RPP chief Thapa was inducted into the Cabinet, the Nepali Congress reportedly agreed to make him the senior-most DPM.
