A months-long dispute regarding the new curricula in grades 11 and 12 has ended with stakeholders and the government agreeing to let students choose between maths and social studies.

Earlier, a group of educationists had protested the proposed curricula as the officials had removed maths from the list of compulsory subjects even for the students preparing for engineering and medical courses.

But, a meeting of the National Curriculum Development and Evaluation Council held on Thursday decided to require these students to study maths instead of social studies and life skills, informs Education Secretary Gopi Nath Mainali.

Experts who had demanded that maths be a compulsory subject have welcomed the decision. Chet Raj Bhatta, the president of Nepal Mathematics Concern Society, says, “We would like to thank the government of Nepal and everyone supporting our campaign.”
