Kathmandu, September 12

A lawmaker of the main opposition Nepali Congress on Thursday demanded that Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health and Population Upendra Yadav resign taking responsibility of the government’s failure to control recent dengue epidemic.

Speaking at a meeting of the House of Representatives today, Sanjay Kumar Gautam said the government was a mute spectator even after the infectious disease already spread across the country and it left a minister and several prominent health workers bedridden.

“Where is the minister responsible for the country’s health?,” Gautam said, “He should not be silent at this time.”

Earlier, in response to concerns raised by various lawmakers, Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara had issued a ruling to the Health Minister and the government to tell the House about the outbreak.

But, Gautam said, “The ruling cannot be sufficient. I demand the health minister resign. The government should not remain a mute spectator. It should announce an emergency and move ahead.”
