Kathmandu, January 2
CPN (Maoist Center) Chairperson Pushpa Kamal Dahal has agreed with Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Thapa’s proposal to establish a powerful commission for investigating assets.
During a meeting of the State Affairs Committee today, Thapa proposed introducing new legislation to address gaps in the current legal framework for combating corruption and money laundering. He also suggested forming a powerful commission to oversee such investigations and emphasised the need for day-long discussions among the top leaders of major political parties.
Referring to the use of corruption files as threats among political leaders, Thapa highlighted the need for clarity and transparency. He remarked, “Leaders have been making statements about opening files related to cantonments or Giribandhu. Such actions create confusion among the public. We need a discussion involving the top leaders of all major parties to address these issues.”
Thapa further proposed holding a dedicated meeting to deliberate on which corruption cases and files should be addressed. He noted, “Former prime ministers and the current prime minister are here. Let us convene a meeting under this committee and discuss which files to open regarding corruption scandals.”
He added, “There is a growing trend of leaders, whether in or out of government, threatening to disclose corruption files. Citizens are tired of hearing about these so-called ‘files.’ Instead, we should focus on the role of constitutional bodies like the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) in handling these cases.”
After Thapa concluded his remarks, Dahal sought time to speak again, acknowledging the seriousness of Thapa’s points. Dahal stated, “What Gaganji has raised is indeed a serious matter. The core issue is intent and integrity. If the intent is right and there is sincerity, we can move in a positive direction. However, it would be more appropriate to discuss this thoroughly with all top leaders present.”
