
Marrakesh, November 18
Nepal is set to receive $2.9 million (Rs 29 crore) from the Green Climate Fund to help the country prepare its national Adaptation plan.
The news comes as 22nd session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 22) to the UNFCCC wraps up in Marrakesh, Morocco later today.
Nepal’s Minister for Population and Environment Jayadev Joshi, said “This conference was very important for Nepal as we look to implement the Paris. We are happy to share with you that Nepal will receive $ 2.9 million from the Green Climate fund.”
The announcement of the grants was made by Zaheer Fakir, GCF Board Co-Chair, and Javier Manzanares, Executive Director a.i., at a high-level event convened by the President of COP22, H.E. Salaheddine Mezouar, on Progress in advancing National Adaptation Plans.
The financial support from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) will be made available through the United Nations Environment Program(UNEP), ” said Ram Prasad Lamsal, joint s secretary at the MoPE.
The Nepali delegation to COP 22 says it has stressed on themes like adaptation, greenhouse gas emission, climate finance and mitigation. Apart from this, Nepal has also raised the issue of effective mobilisation of the Fund.
The Fund is a unique global initiative to respond to climate change by investing into low-emission and climate-resilient development. GCF was established by 194 governments to limit or reduce greenhouse gas emissions in developing countries, and to help adapt vulnerable societies to the unavoidable impacts of climate change.
