Renowned global media outlet CNN has included Nepali mountaineer Purnima Shrestha in its list of successful athletes for 2024.
The list highlights athletes who achieved remarkable feats worldwide in 2024. CNN acknowledged Shrestha’s record-breaking achievement of climbing Mount Everest three times within two weeks, accomplishing the feat in just 13 days. Shrestha, also a photojournalist, made history with this accomplishment.
“My body was exhausted. At times, I felt foolish and even considered abandoning my goal,” she told CNN Sport. Despite financial challenges, Shrestha credited her unwavering commitment to her dream for her success.
In 2021, Shrestha became the first Nepali woman to summit Mount Dhaulagiri, the world’s seventh-highest peak.
Expressing her pride in being recognised by CNN, Shrestha shared her thoughts on social media, calling 2024 a historic year in her life.
“This year, 2024, became a historic milestone in my life. I succeeded in becoming the first and only woman in the world to summit Mount Everest three times in a single climbing season,” she wrote. “I extend my heartfelt thanks to my family, friends, and all who supported and encouraged me on this journey. May 2025 bring new heights and even more adventurous endeavors for us all.”
