The China Foundation for Rural Development (CFRD) has arrived in Kathmandu with 27 tons of relief supplies for people affected by the devastating flood in the Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwa on August 26.
The first phase of relief supplies arrived at Tribhuvan International Airport under CFRD’s “8.26 Nepal Mudslide Rescue Operation.” After fast-moving floodwaters carrying mud and debris damaged settlements, roads, bridges and other infrastructure, CFRD’s Nepal office immediately activated its emergency response mechanism and began assessing the affected areas and distributing relief supplies.
The first batch of supplies brought from China includes 175 tents, 1,000 blankets, 1,000 warm cotton coats, 1,000 emergency humanitarian relief kits and 6,000 medical packing bags. The supplies, weighing around 27 tons in total, are worth more than 1 million Chinese yuan, according to CFRD. The organisation said the materials will be sent to flood-affected areas of Rasuwa in coordination with the Nepal government’s disaster management mechanism.
Similarly, CFRD has begun arrangements to provide 14 tents, 500 food packages, livelihood supplies for 500 families and 5,000 solar lights in Nuwakot. The food packages contain items including rice, cooking oil and lentils. CFRD said it will continue assisting in the coming days based on the changing needs and conditions of affected communities.
Chinese enterprises and partners, including Highflyer Quant, Beijing Tongxinyuan and Zhejiang Anjihui, contributed to the relief effort. CFRD’s humanitarian engagement in Nepal is not new. Following the 2015 earthquake, the organisation began its involvement in Nepal with emergency rescue and reconstruction efforts, which later expanded to community development, youth training, clean drinking water, agricultural development and disaster management. The organisation said it also assisted during the COVID-19 pandemic and disasters in Jajarkot, Sindhupalchok and Gorkha.
