Kathmandu, March 15

Embattled Chief Justice Gopal Prasad Parajuli has tendered his resignation a day after the Judicial Council announced that Parajuli ought to have retired in July and cannot continue as the Chief Justice.

Parajuli met President Bhandari at her office and submitted his resignation, Sheetal Niwas spokesperson Hari Prasad Dawadi confirmed. Earlier in the day, senior-most Justice Deepak Raj Joshee took charge of the Supreme Court as its acting Chief Justice.

According to sources, the President, in a bid to ‘legalise’ her oath-taking ceremony, which was conducted by a ‘retired’ Chief Justice, accepted the resignation and made sure it became effective from Thursday only.

Parajuli was dragged into controversy after reports emerged that he allegedly forged his papers to stay in power.
