Over 100 young boys escaped from the juvenile detention centre in Sano Thimi on Monday.

The boys broke through the door at the back of the centre’s building and escaped, said chief district officer, Khagendra Rijal.

According to Rijal, they escaped after attacking security personnel.

There are 299 boys and girls serving sentences for various crimes at the juvenile detention centre.

“We don’t know how many boys escaped. We are assessing the situation,” said Rijal.

The boys attacked the security personnel and fled the centre after a young boy, who was at the juvenile centre on charges of rape, was found dead.

The relatives of the deceased, Kamal Basnet, demonstrated outside the centre demanding answers. They said the death was mysterious.

Using that as a catalyst, over 100 young boys have escaped the centre.

A committee has been formed to investigate the death of Basnet.
