Economist Dr Biswo Poudel has been appointed as the 18th Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank. The appointment was made during Tuesday evening’s cabinet meeting, ending the long-standing uncertainty over the position of the central bank’s chief.
The appointment is also seen as a resolution to the recent political tension reportedly surrounding the selection of the new governor.
A recommendation committee led by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel had proposed three candidates earlier on Tuesday.
Alongside Paudel, Acting Governor Neelam Dhungana and former secretary Dinesh Bhattarai were shortlisted. Paudel, who was at the top of the list, was selected by the cabinet.
