Bidya Bhattarai sworn in as lawmaker

Bidya Bhattarai, who was elected a House of Representatives member representing Kaski-2 during the by-election on November 30, has taken her oath of office and secrecy in Kathmandu on Tuesday.

Deputy Speaker Shiva Maya Tumbahamphe administered Bhattarai the oath. Bhattarai will participate in the new House session scheduled to begin this Friday.

Bhattarai’s husband Rabindra Adhikari was elected to the position in the 2017 parliamentary elections. Adhikari, who was also the sitting Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation then, died in a helicopter crash in February this year, leaving the seat vacant.

Therefore, the Election Commission had conducted the by-election there. Bhattarai on behalf of the Nepal Communist Party had defeated Khem Raj Paudel of the Nepali Congress by over 8,000 votes.
