Archaeology department prepares blue print for new Dharahara

Kathmandu, March 31

Nepal’s Department of Archaeology has prepared a Rs 800 million plan to build a new Dharahara right next to the old monument, devasted by the April 2015 quake.

According to the department, the new Dharahara and a park around it will be built on area of 5.27 acres. The new tower will be 245 ft tall. It will also have underground parking for visitors. The department says it will incorporate latest advances in tower design into the new edifice.

Last year the department had commissioned a study on how the monument should be rebuilt. It had come to a conclusion that modern building materials should be used to build the new structure, but the design should reflect that of the old Dharahara.

The department’s Director General Bhesh Narayan Dahal said the detailed design of the new Dharahara will be handed over to Nepal Telecom soon and work on its construction will begin at the earliest.
