Kathmandu, October 7
Nepali Congress President Gagan Thapa has said the party president has no greater rights or status within the party than an ordinary grassroots worker.
Addressing the closed session of the Nepali Congress’ 15th General Convention in Kathmandu, Thapa said the party should be viewed as a single family, with the current contest being about who takes on responsibility rather than about winning or losing everything.
“Congress is a family. Within a family, our competition is over who will take responsibility. The person who wins does not win everything, and the person who loses does not lose everything,” he said.
Thapa said the presidency or any other party position is simply a responsibility assigned for a specific period, rather than a permanent status or privilege.
“The right and status I have in this party is equal to that of the colleague sitting on the floor of the party,” Thapa said. “The party president is not someone to be revered or treated as superior. It is simply a responsibility entrusted to someone for a specified period.”
His remarks come as the Nepali Congress prepares to elect its new leadership during the ongoing general convention, with several leaders competing for key positions.
