Nepal Red Cross urges public to donate blood amid shortage

Kathmandu, October 28

The Nepal Red Cross Society has made a special appeal to the public to donate blood. The appeal comes as blood donation programmes at the Central Blood Transfusion Service were suspended during the extended public holiday for Dashain, Nepal’s major festival, while demand for blood for patients receiving hospital treatment continues to rise daily.

According to Dr Prakash Yadav, chief of the Nepal Red Cross Society’s Central Blood Transfusion Service, the centre has run out of its blood stock.

Dr Yadav has urged voluntary blood donors who last donated blood three months ago, as well as young men and women aged 18 and above, to donate blood.

Nepal Red Cross Society President Dr Bishalkumar Bhandari said the decline in blood donation programmes during the festive period had made it difficult to ensure an adequate supply of blood. He called on voluntary blood donors and organisations to organise blood donation programmes.

The Nepal Red Cross Society operates blood transfusion services through centres and units at 120 locations across 73 districts.
