Dhangadhi, October 26

Vehicle accidents during Dashain have increased in Sudurpaschim Province. This year’s Dashain alone saw more accidents than last year’s entire period from Dashain to Chhath.

From Ghatasthapana to Friday, 152 vehicle accidents were recorded across the province. According to the Sudurpaschim Province Traffic Police Office, Attariya, six people died and 243 were injured in those accidents.

According to police, Kailali recorded the most accidents, with 88 vehicle accidents killing four people and injuring 146. In Kanchanpur, 35 vehicle accidents killed two people and injured 50. No deaths were recorded in the other districts.

There were 10 accidents in Dadeldhura, 8 in Doti, 5 in Achham, 2 each in Darchula and Bajura, and 1 each in Bajhang and Baitadi. Forty-seven people were injured in these accidents.

The number of accidents this Dashain has broken last year’s record. Police said this Dashain saw more accidents than last year’s entire Dashain-to-Chhath period.

According to traffic police, only 122 vehicles were involved in accidents across the province from Dashain to Chhath last year. Those accidents killed 23 people and injured 253. This year, however, 152 accidents during Dashain alone have killed six people and injured 243.

The traffic police data shows that controlling and reducing vehicle accidents during festivals is becoming increasingly challenging. However, the fall in the number of deaths despite the rise in accidents is being seen as a positive.
