Chinese nationals engaged in illegal gold trading from Budhanilkantha, Kathmandu, have been found using the house of a person living in the United States as their base.
Police sources said they had rented the house, owned by a person with the surname Bista, since last Shrawan. The monthly rent was set at Rs 330,000, and police sources said the landlord had been paid four months’ rent in advance.
Acting on information that illegal gold trading was taking place in the rented house, police raided it on Thursday and arrested three Chinese nationals. Police said they also recovered about 21 kg of gold, along with various machines and equipment, from the house.
According to police, one member of the Chinese group first came to Kathmandu to assess the market and the state of business here before returning to China. The other two then came to Nepal. Sources said that after arriving in Nepal, they were seen going to and from the airport three to four times.
