Minister for Education and Sports Sasmit Pokharel has directed that students’ results at the university be made public within one month.
Speaking at the meeting for Tribhuvan University’s (TU) 67th anniversary, Minister Pokharel, who is also the university’s pro-chancellor, said the ministry often receives complaints that exams and results are not held on time.
“The Chancellor, the Prime Minister, has also directed that results be brought out within one month,” Minister Pokharel said.
He urged the university to implement the academic calendar. He also called for decentralising the university’s powers.
“It will be even more effective if decentralisation can be achieved,” he said.
He said convocation ceremonies should also be held in other provinces.
Minister Pokharel said the government is working on education reform.
“We are set to reform education. But we have not been able to tell the university and the school apart. The university is a think tank,” he said. “We are drafting an Education Act. We are working on curriculum reform. We are in the process of making a new education policy. The university’s role in this should be greater.”
He urged the university to build infrastructure at TU’s constituent campuses and to attract foreign students. He stressed a transparent university, digital systems, life-relevant education and a research-friendly university.
In earlier assemblies, the TU Assembly was chaired by the Chancellor, who is the Prime Minister. This time, in the Chancellor’s absence, Pro-Chancellor Pokharel chaired the TU Assembly.
