Numbers of people are returning home from India through the Jamunaha border point in Nepalgunj to celebrate Dashain.

The number of Nepalis returning home is rising daily as the festival nears, said Chief Police Inspector Rajan Prasad Bhattarai, head of the Area Police Office, Jamunaha, Banke.

More than 50,000 Nepalis have returned home through the Jamunaha border point for Dashain in the past five days, he said. “Queues of Nepalis returning home from India for Dashain are forming from morning till evening now. More than 10,000 citizens come through the Jamunaha border point every day,” he said. “Nepal Police has been coordinating to prevent criminal incidents such as robbery against them in the border area.”

Nepalis who work in New Delhi, Mumbai and various cities in Himachal Pradesh are returning home for Dashain.

Banke Chief District Officer Dilkumar Tamang said a passenger help desk has been set up at the Jamunaha border point to ensure Nepalis returning from India for the festival are not robbed, cheated or left stranded in the border area, and are taken safely to their destinations.

“We have put a security plan in place by putting citizens’ safety first and identifying possible risks,” CDO Tamang said. “The passenger help desk is operating right at the Jamunaha border point so that Nepalis returning from India do not face problems such as fraud and robbery along the way.”

He said the help desk will provide the necessary information, coordination and help for the convenience and safety of the large number of passengers who go to India for work and return home at festival time.

Banke’s police chief, Senior Superintendent of Police Angur GC, said a special security plan has been put in place to control criminal activity during the festival, with arrangements to take Nepalis returning from India safely to their destinations.

Police Superintendent GC said passenger help desks will also operate from Tuesday at the Nepalgunj and Kohalpur bus parks, aimed at the rush of Nepalis returning from India.
