Kathmandu, October 5
Although the monsoon has begun withdrawing from Nepal, meteorologists say rainfall activity will increase in the coming days. They say rain is likely to be somewhat heavier from today until the day after tomorrow.
According to Dr Binod Pokharel, associate professor at Tribhuvan University’s Central Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, the monsoon system remains over eastern Nepal, and moisture-laden air is arriving from the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea, which is why rainfall activity is set to rise.
“Going by the current situation, rain is likely in many places until roughly the day before Ghatasthapana of Dashain,” Pokharel said. He expects rainfall to ease somewhat on Ghatasthapana itself.
Madhavi Sigdel, a meteorologist at the Meteorological Forecasting Division of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, also said scattered rainfall will continue in various parts of the country from today.
The division issues forecasts for only three days at a time, and Sigdel said rain will continue throughout the next three days. She added that rainfall is likely to increase particularly in the western region in the coming days.
Rain likely today too
Meteorologists say rain is possible again today. According to Sigdel, moderate rain is likely this afternoon in a few places across the hilly and mountainous regions, including the Kathmandu Valley, and in some parts of the Tarai.
Pokharel said many places in the hilly region could see rain on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, the day after tomorrow, rain is likely in even more places from west to east. Pokharel said one or two places in Sudurpaschim could also see heavy rainfall on the same day.
Rain from Karnali to Koshi in the past 24 hours
Rain fell across the country from Karnali to Koshi in the past 24 hours. Moderate to heavy rain was recorded in some places in Koshi, Madhesh, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces in particular.
Rain has also been falling for the past hour in Bargadha in Bardiya, Simalpani in Arghakhanchi and Gadhawa in Dang, all in Lumbini Province.
According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, skies are generally cloudy in Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces, and partly cloudy in Madhesh, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces. The forecasting division said fog has also set in at some locations.
The division’s bulletin says moderate rainfall is likely in a few places in the Tarai areas of Madhesh, Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki, and in one or two places in the Tarai areas of Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces.
