Kathmandu, September 30
Two-way traffic has resumed on the Ghasa-Korala road after the Department of Roads cleared landslides blocking the route, paving the way for the reopening of the Korala border point with China.
The Korala border point had been closed following recent rains, floods and landslides that damaged roads and bridges in the Mustang area.
According to the Department of Roads, the Ghasa-Korala section has now been cleared and is ready for two-way traffic.
However, several sections between Mustang and Beni remain damaged after roads were washed away. The department is working to clear these sections by cutting into hillsides and constructing retaining walls where necessary.
The department said it expects to restore traffic along the affected sections by Thursday evening.
Work is also underway to repair road damage caused by erosion in the Tatopani area, with traffic expected to resume by Wednesday evening.
The approach roads to the Pokhare Bazaar bridge are expected to be completed by Thursday evening. Similarly, road damage near the Raghu Ghat Hydropower Project is being repaired through back-cutting and construction of retaining walls, with traffic expected to resume by Thursday evening.
The Department of Roads is also working along the Maldhunga-Beni-Kerabari section to open a track along the hillside and construct retaining walls to restore traffic.
The Korala crossing is currently the only one of Nepal’s three major border points with China where the road on the Nepali side is being restored after recent weather-related disruptions. Rasuwagadhi was damaged by floods in Bhadra, while Tatopani has been closed by the Chinese side.
