Kathmandu, September 27
Presented by Kym Rapier Foundation in collaboration with Shanta Nepali Productions and Shanta Foundation, a free, immersive filmmaking workshop was organised on Saturday, September 26, giving participants the chance to learn directly from industry practitioners.
The workshop featured Emmy-nominated directors, an experienced cinematographer, and other professional filmmakers as instructors, including Burt Gregory, Luke Cormack, Jovan Sales, Zachary Tidmore, Christian Palladino, and Matthew Venezio.
Participants got hands-on experience with professional filmmaking equipment, covering cinematography, camera operation, composition, lighting, and visual storytelling. The session also explored how to shoot and tell stories in tough terrain and extreme conditions, with a focus on real-world challenges, problem-solving, and adapting filmmaking techniques to unpredictable environments.
According to the organiser, the main objective behind the workshop was to exchange knowledge with filmmakers from across the world.
“Whenever a team of international filmmakers visits Nepal, only certain people have access to them, resulting in only a few gaining knowledge from them,” said Shanta Nepali, founder of Shanta Nepali Production and Shanta Foundation. “This time, we wanted to break that practice and conduct the workshop for a relatively larger number of people.”
Rather than a classroom-based session, the workshop was built around learning by doing. Participants handled equipment, shot scenes, experimented with techniques, and received guidance and feedback from experienced filmmakers.
The workshop was held at Hotel Yak and Yeti from 1 pm to 3 pm on September 26. Participation was free for everyone, offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
