Continuous rainfall has blocked the main highways connecting to Kathmandu. The Prithvi Highway, BP Highway, and Kantilokpath are all closed after landslides hit multiple points along these routes, halting vehicle movement since early morning. With the rain not letting up, administrative offices in the affected districts have suspended vehicle operations.
The Tribhuvan Highway (Hetauda–Naubise–Kathmandu), considered the capital’s lifeline road, is running one-way only.
Naresh Raj Subedi, spokesperson for the Valley Traffic Police Office at Ramshah Path, said the highway has been kept open one-way to bring essential supplies into Kathmandu. He said vehicles are not being allowed to use the highway to leave via Kathmandu, only to come in from the Makwanpur side, explaining that the one-way arrangement was made specifically to ease the transport of essential goods into the city.
Small vehicles can still travel to and from Kathmandu via the Hetauda–Bhimphedi–Kulekhani–Phakhel–Pharping route and the Kulekhani–Sisneri–Pharping route, though police say larger cargo trucks cannot use these roads. Vehicle movement on these roads is also suspended at night by local authorities.
According to traffic police, the route via Tokha Chahare and Sankhu is also open for small vehicles.
However, for transporting essential food and fuel supplies to Kathmandu, only the Tribhuvan Highway remains open — and only in one direction.
