Government to strengthen disaster authority, no new body planned

Kathmandu, September 21

The government has decided not to establish a new authority for the reconstruction of infrastructure damaged by the Rasuwa-Bhotekoshi floods.

Infrastructure Development Minister Sunil Lamsal said this while speaking at a meeting of the House of Representatives Infrastructure Development Committee on Monday.

According to him, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority will instead be strengthened. He said the government has no plan to establish a new authority and that a bill to strengthen the existing authority through legal reforms is being drafted.

“We will strengthen the Disaster Authority through legal reforms,” he said. “A bill to that effect will be introduced soon.”

Lamsal said around Rs 100 billion would be required for infrastructure reconstruction alone.

He said the government plans to begin reconstruction by reallocating funds from other projects and later reimburse those projects once the reconstruction budget is secured.
