Kathmandu, September 13
Senior leader of the Nepali Communist Party and former prime minister Jhalanath Khanal has said Nepal should learn from China’s development experience and develop its own model of development and socialism based on the country’s unique circumstances.
Addressing the closing session of the third edition of the Kathmandu Dialogue in Kathmandu on Sunday, Khanal said Nepal could draw important lessons from the political stability and economic development China has achieved since the 1949 revolution.
He said China had treated political stability as the first and foremost condition for development and that establishing a foundation for sustainable stability remains a major challenge for Nepal.
According to Khanal, China did not simply copy development models from other countries but developed a path suited to its own political, economic, social, cultural and historical context.
He said Nepal should similarly develop its own model during its process of political change and transformation rather than directly imitating foreign systems.
Khanal said Nepal could learn from China’s political system and governance, but warned against copying the Chinese model outright. He also argued that China’s system was shaped by its long history and cultural, political, ideological and philosophical development.
“We need to think in the context of our own country,” he said.
