Kathmandu, September 8
Memorial Day is being observed nationwide today in remembrance of the Gen Z martyrs.
As part of this, the Gen Z Martyrs’ Welfare Society has organised a memorial event on the premises of the old Parliament building in New Baneshwor.
Various government ministers as well as members of parliament are taking part in the program.
Those participating include Home Minister Sudan Gurung, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Sobita Gautam, Minister for Physical Infrastructure Sunil Lamsal, Health Minister Nisha Mehta, Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation Mahabir Pun, and Agriculture Minister Gita Chaudhary, among others.
The government has declared September 8 as the “Gen Z Martyrs’ Day” and given a nationwide public holiday today.
On September 8, 19 people died after being shot by police during a protest in the federal capital, Kathmandu. Protests took place across the country on September 9 in opposition to that incident.
Over the two days of protests, 76 people, including security personnel and protesters, died, and arson also occurred at government and private structures.
