A fire broke out at the records section of the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court administration said the fire destroyed documents that had been kept for disposal and were no longer in use. “After we learned about the fire last night, security personnel and court employees arrived, called the fire brigade and brought the fire under control,” said Supreme Court spokesperson Arjun Koirala. “The fire broke out in an area where obsolete documents and copies of legal journals were stored.”
Court employees suspect that an electrical plug may have short-circuited and caused the fire in the records section of the newly constructed building. Spokesperson Koirala said no documents related to pending cases were damaged in the fire. According to him, the fire did not spread beyond the room housing the records section.
Courts maintain records sections to store files and documents related to cases that have already been decided. After a certain period, case files are destroyed while only the judgments are preserved. Koirala said that since the new building is still under construction, only obsolete and unused files and documents had been stored in the records section.
Following the arson at the Supreme Court on September 10, 2025, the court has been operating from its annex building. Some benches and administrative offices have now been moved to a section of the building currently under construction.
