China’s Ministry of Water Resources says the glaciers around the impact crater formed in Nepal’s Chochen (Bhotekoshi) River remain at risk of further collapse, which could pose a major danger.
Chinese state media CCTV News published this report on Tuesday, citing the ministry.
According to CCTV, the ministry continues consultation and monitoring to assess ongoing risks connected to the mudflow-flood disaster that struck Gyirong (Kerung) County in southwest China’s Xizang (Tibet) Autonomous Region.
According to a recent comparative analysis of remote-sensing images, no significant change has been observed in the water surface area of the 14 previously identified glacial lakes in the Gyirong Zangbo river basin. Those lakes remain largely stable overall.
Based on a drone image taken Tuesday at 5:45 a.m. Nepal time, most of the water that had accumulated in the impact crater at Nepal’s Chochen River has now drained out, and river flow in the downstream areas has returned to normal.
However, the report notes that the risk of the glacier or ice mass around the crater collapsing remains.
