Families scan rescue lists, hoping to find missing loved ones

Dozens gather around a list of flood survivors, hoping to find the names of relatives who remain missing.

Nuwakot, August 28

A list of flood victims rescued and brought to the Shree No. 1 Military Training Centre in Nuwakot has been posted on a wall outside the army facility.

Throughout the day, dozens of people gather around the list.

They scan the names carefully, searching for relatives who went missing in the floods. For many, the list represents a small but desperate hope of finding their loved ones.

A long queue forms as people arrive to check the names. At times, those gathered around the list can be seen jostling to get a closer look.

But many walk away disappointed after failing to find the names they are looking for.

The army has set up a help desk nearby. Those who cannot find the names of their missing relatives on the list have been asked to register their details at the desk.

The help desk, too, remains crowded.

The number of people gathered there offers a grim indication of the scale of those still missing following the floods.
