KATHMANDU, August 28
The Communist Party of China (CPC) has decided to provide emergency assistance to disaster-affected areas in Nepal and advance international rescue cooperation following the floods and landslides in the Gyirong area.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the CPC Political Bureau chaired by Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday, according to Xinhua.
The meeting assessed the flooding in the Gyirong area and discussed ongoing rescue and relief efforts following the devastating landslide. Xi instructed relevant authorities to make the necessary arrangements to strengthen the response.
At the beginning of the meeting, Xi, who is also chairman of the Central Military Commission, and other senior leaders observed a minute of silence in memory of those who died in the natural disaster at the Gyirong border crossing on Wednesday.
“Under the strong leadership of the Party Central Committee, emergency rescue operations have been carried out in an intensive, orderly and effectively coordinated manner,” Xinhua reported. “Comprehensive efforts are also being made for the resettlement of affected people and post-disaster management.”
The meeting noted that the disaster occurred in an extremely cold mountainous region characterised by steep valleys, changing weather conditions, numerous glaciers and glacial lakes, and potential geological hazards, creating significant challenges for emergency rescue operations.
It stressed that all relevant agencies and departments must take firm and effective measures to advance rescue efforts.
The meeting also called for search and rescue plans to be developed scientifically and for every possible effort to be made to locate and rescue all missing Chinese and foreign nationals.
