The government has said glaciers broke off from a large lake formed near the confluence of the Chochen River and the Purepu Tsangpo River in China. However, government spokesperson and Education Minister Sasmita Pokharel said there is no immediate major risk.
He shared the information while speaking to journalists following Thursday’s Cabinet meeting.
He also said the government is maintaining continuous communication with the Chinese government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“We are in continuous communication with the Chinese government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. We have also been informed by the Chinese side that there is no such major risk. I would like to urge everyone to remain alert,” spokesperson Pokharel said.
He said there was no report of a dam bursting, but the breaking of glaciers had caused water mixed with mud to overflow in several areas.
“There is no information that a dam has burst anywhere. Since glaciers have broken off, water mixed with mud has overflowed in several places,” spokesperson Pokharel said. “No major immediate risk has been observed, but it is necessary to remain alert.”
Earlier, Rasuwa Chief District Officer Narendra Pariyar had said he received information from the Chinese side that the lake formed on the Chinese side had burst.
Security personnel are currently moving people living near the river to safer locations.
