Kathmandu, August 28
Chinese authorities are closely monitoring a large lake that formed after a lake near the confluence of Chhochen and Purepu Tsangpo rivers burst, according to information shared with Nepali officials.
According to government sources, the Chinese side has assessed that although water flow from the lake is increasing, the immediate risk of a major outburst flood remains low.
In a message sent to Nepali authorities, the Chinese side said water was continuously overflowing from the lake and that the lake was growing in size as the volume of water increased.
“However, under the current circumstances, the risk of a major explosive outflow of water is low,” the message said.
Chinese authorities have also reported an earlier incident in which ice and rocks fell in an area downstream of the lake. They said they were continuing to monitor conditions at the site.
The Chinese side has assured Nepali authorities that it will provide further information if there are any significant developments.
