The Kathmandu Valley Mayors’ Forum is preparing to meet Prime Minister Balen Shah to brief him on issues related to waste management.
A meeting of the forum held on Tuesday decided to seek an appointment with Prime Minister Shah as soon as possible to draw his attention to waste management, management of streetlight charges, land-use rights for land being used by local governments, and arrangements for land needed for waste management, according to forum chair and Mayor of Lalitpur Metropolitan City Chiribabu Maharjan.
The forum said it would also raise concerns over the conduct of lawmaker Ashika Tamang towards its office-bearers and members during a meeting on waste management held at Singha Durbar on August 21.
The forum also discussed the implementation of an agreement reached between the then government and Nep Waste for waste management in the Kathmandu Valley when Shah was mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City. It also considered whether the agreement should instead be scrapped to clear the way for alternative waste-management arrangements.
The forum concluded that waste management in the Kathmandu Valley is a shared concern and responsibility of all three tiers of government.
