3 impoverished families receive earthquake-resistant homes in Khotang

Khotang, August 23

Three homeless and impoverished families in Halesi Tuwachung Municipality, Khotang, have received newly built earthquake-resistant homes constructed by the municipality.

The municipality spent Rs 500,000 on each two-room, single-storey house for families unable to build homes due to poverty.

The beneficiaries are Deshbir Rai of Dikua in Ward No. 2, Bhaya Damai of Mangalatar in Ward No. 6, and Tek Bahadur Sarki of Arkhaula in Ward No. 10. Rai and his elderly wife had been living in a dilapidated hut, while Damai and her brother Chame, who have disabilities, had also been living in difficult conditions. Sarki’s family had been living in other people’s houses after returning to their village following years away.

The homes were built under the Safe Citizen Housing Programme, according to Mayor Bimala Rai.

Mayor Rai said the municipality was committed to ensuring safe housing for residents who had been living without their own homes or relying on others for shelter.

The municipality has also decided to construct homes for displaced residents who wish to return and settle permanently in their municipality after their temporary homes outside the district were removed. Each such family will receive a house worth Rs 500,000, provided they own land in their name.

The municipality’s 136th executive meeting had decided to construct homes for the three impoverished families.
