Kathmandu, August 21

The faction of the Nepali Congress led by Sher Bahadur Deuba has withdrawn a petition seeking an immediate halt to activities related to the party’s 15th General Convention.

The petition had been filed on behalf of Deuba and Purna Bahadur Khadka, challenging the party’s decision to proceed with the convention schedule.

The Supreme Court administration had said it would keep the petition for study and proceed with the remaining process on Monday. However, the Deuba-led faction withdrew the petition on Friday evening, saying it needed to make some corrections.

“The petition was submitted today. The administration had kept it for study. Later in the evening, they came and took it back, saying some corrections needed to be made,” Supreme Court spokesperson Arjun Prasad Koirala told Onlinekhabar.

Deuba and Khadka had submitted the petition through their representatives. Deepak Khadka represented Deuba, while advocate Shrawan Shrestha represented Khadka at the Supreme Court.

The faction has previously challenged the leadership of Gagan Thapa, who was elected from the party’s special general convention, by filing an appeal at the Supreme Court. The court has already ordered a fresh hearing in that case.

The latest petition was filed against what the Deuba faction described as the unilateral publication of the schedule for the 15th General Convention.

The Nepali Congress has scheduled its 15th General Convention for October 2–5.
