Supreme Court holds off on registering petition against NC general convention

Kathmandu, August 21

The Supreme Court has decided to conduct further study of a petition seeking to halt the Nepali Congress’s 15th general convention scheduled for October.

The petition was taken to the Supreme Court by Nepali Congress leader Deepak Khadka and advocate Shravan Kumar Shrestha on behalf of former party president Sher Bahadur Deuba and former vice-president Purna Bahadur Khadka.

They had sought an immediate halt to all preparations and procedures related to the 15th general convention.

However, the petition has not yet been registered at the Supreme Court, according to a Nepali Congress leader.

The Supreme Court administration informed the petitioners that further study was required before the petition could be registered, the leader said.

The group had earlier filed an appeal at the Supreme Court challenging the leadership of Gagan Thapa, who was elected through the party’s special general convention. The Supreme Court has already ordered a fresh hearing in that case.

The latest petition was filed after the party announced the general convention schedule, which the group claims was made unilaterally.

The Nepali Congress has scheduled its 15th general convention for October 2-5.
