The play Miss Menuka: A Sensitive Sex Worker has begun its run at Shilpee Theatre in Battisputali. The Nepali adaptation of the French play La Putain Respectueuse has been staged since Shrawan 13 (July 29).
The original play was written by Jean-Paul Sartre. The Nepali adaptation has been translated by Kalpana Ghimire Nourisson, while the production is directed by Pabitra Khadka.
The story follows Menuka, a sex worker who witnesses an incident while travelling on a bus. To protect the real culprit, influential figures attempt to coerce her into falsely accusing an innocent man of trying to rape her. The police also side with those in power and pressure her to give a fabricated statement. Later, the innocent man approaches Menuka for help in saving his life. What unfolds next forms the central plot of the play.
The production explores how communal discrimination, cultural prejudice, social injustice, gender discrimination, political corruption, and the abuse of power undermine truth and justice.
The cast includes Sarita Giri, Ghimire Yubaraj, Rupesh Mandal, Prabhakar Dev Sharma, Dhanraj Sunar, and Govinda, among others.
The play will continue its run until August 22.
